Facility Description
George Washington University's Clinical Skills Center is doughnut-shaped with the
exterior corridor for standardized patients and includes a standardized patient break
room and training room with a large plasma display. Additionally, there are 12 exam
rooms, two conference rooms/student-testing staging areas, and an operations room with
a large control center console and 6 monitoring stations. The innermost layer has
student computers and one-way mirrors for observation by faculty and proctors. This
is an excellent layout for formative learning projects as it enables faculty to easily
oversee small groups running in various rooms.
Challenges
George Washington University was B-Line Medical's first Clinical Skills client.
Initial requirements dictated that B-Line Medical create a clinical skills system that delivered
operational and functional capabilities similar to competitive systems that were currently
on the market (circa 2003). Beta deployments proved unmanageable because of unnecessary
complexity and significant inefficiencies. B-Line Medical was then given the green light to
redesign the entire clinical skills system to allow for full automation, a streamlined
workflow and more intuitive applications.
B-Line Medical's Solution
Re-evaluating the exam process, the setup process, the case development process, the
formative learning process, and the audiovisual communication issues, B-Line Medical leveraged
its expertise in autonomous satellite control centers to create a highly efficient and
user friendly system that was showcased at the AAMC Conference in November of 2003 with
an overwhelmingly positive response.
