Case Study
Ohio State University Case Study
Facility Description
Ohio State's Facility Layout is doughnut-shaped with an observation corridor equipped with
one-way mirrors looking into each exam room and an SP break room around the outer ring. The
next interior layer consists of 14 exam rooms (one of the exam rooms is a flex room tied to
the procedures lab), an overall system operations room, and a conference area with 2 monitoring
stations. The next inner layer consists of the student corridor that contains all of the student
computers. The innermost area is a large procedures lab with 2 large plasma displays and
teleconferencing capabilities.
Challenges
Ohio State University presented a unique set of challenges in terms of its top-notch network
security, its fault-tolerant requirement, and its desire to securely share video streams to
authenticated users using a variety of secure internet technologies. Additional capabilities
such a seamless voice annotation to prerecorded encounters, integration of an interactive hospital
video distribution system, and video teleconferencing to its procedures lab have driven B-Line Medical's
Clinical Skills System to new boundaries of security, robustness, and capability.
New Features
Ohio State requested a few additional capabilities that are now a standard part of the
Clinical Skills System. These include a standardized patient privacy mode and an integrated
post-production video annotation capability. The privacy mode allows the SP to temporarily
disable video feeds so that he/she can change in the exam room. The post-production annotation
allows the faculty evaluator to download an archived video file, add an annotation and upload the
annotated file to be included with the specific student's exam portfolio.
